Sunsets painting Dubai skies all shades of vermillion and orange are usually what make us do double-takes while strolling on the beach. But recently, we’ve been seeing red on The Beach, JBR thanks to another flame-coloured phenomenon. What at first appears to be a food stall is actually a glamorous fine-dining takeaway restaurant called Jixiang Dim Sum.
This luxury pop-up is the brainchild of folks behind SHI, the Asian restaurant in Bluewaters Island. Jixiang has inherited SHI’s breathtaking views and culinary expertise. But packaging those strengths into the convenience of a takeaway joint is what makes this a winning concept. Sitting barefoot on the beach, you’ll find yourself gobbling up gourmet dumplings against the grand vistas of Ain Dubai and Bluewaters.
The cheery red latticework of this tiny glass-walled cube on the beach blazes into life under the setting sun’s light. Instantly, it’s transformed into a picture-perfect Instagram backdrop. One you want to linger and enjoy. And take portrait pictures of yourself while you’re lingering. Jixiang Dim Sum appreciates this and offers a dine-in option with foldable wooden tables and chairs placed around the pop-up.
Once Mother Nature’s sunset spectacular plays out, a tiny TV fixed to one of Jixiang’s exteriors plays another visual delight on loop – anime. Their fresh made-to-order food is served fast, but it’s definitely not fast food. You’ll be scarfing down exquisitely made Cantonese hits.
Highlights include luscious chicken char siew bao, steaming-hot crab stick dumplings, and adorable custard and chocolate buns that look like pandas and chicks. Wash all that down with tall glasses of bubble teas. Or walk by the beach and watch the waves wash over your toes. They’re both equally satisfying.
