Happy hours might just get a little less happy next year. The Dubai government is planning on bringing back the 30% alcohol sales tax. This tax will come into effect on January 1, 2025, and will potentially increase the prices of alcoholic beverages in the city, from hops and grape drinks to other spirits.
How will the alcohol sales tax affect me?
In 2022, the alcohol sales tax was put on hold by the Dubai Municipality for one year, from January 2022 until December 31, 2023. The suspension was then extended into 2024.
The changes in rules allowed restaurants, hotels, and bars to provide drinks at reduced prices to customers. With the 30% sales tax now being added to the cost, you may have to frequent your local pub a little less frequently.
Alcohol supply stores, such as MMI and African+Eastern, where customers with alcohol licenses can purchase alcohol directly have also confirmed they will comply with this new fee.
Where to get an alcohol license in Dubai?
You can consume alcohol in Dubai without a license. It’s completely legal to order a drink at pubs, bars, clubs, hotels and any licensed venues in the country for individuals who are of the drinking age of 21 years or older.
Up until November 7, 2020, it was illegal to consume alcohol in the UAE without an alcohol license in your possession. This law was amended and alcohol consumption has now been decriminalised for four years.
However, if you plan to purchase alcohol for your personal use, you still need to obtain a license. Alcohol licenses are free and you can apply for them at any African + Eastern or MMI store. Show up with your Emirates ID or passport if you’re a tourist and the staff will process your license instantly.
