Musos of Dubai, listen up. There’s a top-secret concert happening in a little over 24 hours from now and you definitely want to get in on this.
Organised by the London-based secret music events company Sofar, this is their first gig in Dubai in years. They briefly popped up on our radars in 2016 and 2017 and then vanished without an echo.
Fortunately, we’ve been keeping our ears to the ground for you and have news that’s music for yours – a Sofar concert will play out in an intimate secret venue in Dubai tomorrow at 7:30pm. Tickets cost AED 95.
How does that work?
The line-up will see three artistes, details about whom is highly classified information until you get to the venue, which by the is a revealed only 36 hours before the gig.
So if your curiosity is getting the best of you, buy the tickets and find out whether you’ll be sat in a plush Jumeirah villa’s backyard or on the floor wedged between strangers and clothes racks in a boutique store.
When it comes to the genre of performers taking to stage, Sofar concerts follows Forrest Gump’s advice of treating life like a box of chocolates. You could find yourself listening to an up-and-coming local artiste/band and discover a Billboard-topping artist before the rest of the world – Billie Eilish performed at a 2016 Sofar gig in LA.
Sometimes even spoken word, comedy, and dance make an appearance.
Or you can find yourself being serenaded by Robert Pattinson, like a group of starstruck London concert-goers did in 2013.
Why should I give this my money?
What sets the experience apart from your average Dubai concert and makes it memorable is the intimate ambiance – think a jam session but featuring insanely talented musicians.
Stripping down a concert experience to its basics – good music and great sounds without being overwhelmed by the trappings of a fancy venue is what makes the entire experience worthwhile. It’s the bedrock of the 13-year-old concert series’ success. In fact, Sofar is an acronym for Songs From A Room.
Does it really, though?
Holding their cards close to their chest when it comes to revealing who concert-goers will be listening to and where has worked in Sofar’s favour – the concept has struck a chord with music lovers over 400 cities where Sofar’s pop-up gigs are highly sought after.
Dubai finally gets to be a part of the cool club tomorrow and we’re chuffed to bits. We’ll have to wait and watch what musical sweet treat we’ll be discovering at tomorrow’ Sofar concert.
