The fifth edition of Arab Cinema Week has opened at Cinema Akil in Alserkal Avenue. You will be wrapped in a cocoon of vintage-inspired visuals – a tribute to the region’s theatrical history. Settle into the independent cinema’s signature red seats as a presenter takes to the microphone to start the programme. A large screen takes the stage, projecting retro-styled poster featuring the historic Rivoli building with classic Arabic typography and an illustration of a rearview mirror reflecting a vintage cinematic scene. It’s a beautiful experience highlighting regional films that will make you feel something.
A week of non-stop regional films at Cinema Akil’s Arab Cinema Week
The festival, which runs from June 5 through June 11, transforms the venue into a hub for regional storytelling. The striking title slide projected during the opening remarks highlighted the collaborative nature of the event, displaying logos from partners including Fujifilm, Khamsa, and Alserkal Avenue. The room’s distinct red patterned wallpaper and dim lighting added to the intimate atmosphere as the audience listened to the opening address.
By utilizing the screen to display a mix of nostalgic architecture and contemporary branding, the presentation immediately set the tone for an event dedicated to both the legacy and the current landscape of Arab filmmaking.
