Dubai’s music and dance lovers are in for a treat; on September 30 and October 1 witness a ballerina pirouette on board the historic Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) cruise ship to the tinkling tunes of the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, bathed in the glow of thousands of candles. If that transcendent image has given you goosebumps, hurry up and get your tickets to Dubai’s first Candlelight Ballet.
This is an unmissable night-out that packs in the best of classical music and dance with a generous sprinkling of British and maritime history. Legendary Russian composer Tchaikovsky’s stirring scores deserve an equally epic setting and that’s exactly what the Queen Elizabeth 2 floating hotel is. Before it was docked at Dubai’s Port Rashid to become a historic floating hotel, the QE2 has led a fascinating life. Inaugurated in 1967 by its namesake, the late Queen Elizabeth II, this ship was one of the world’s largest passenger liners that roamed the oceans for 40 years, but the luxury cruise has also seen action when it served as a troop ship during the Falklands War
This 13-deck-ship is laden with more history than a museum and retains gorgeous art deco interiors from its glory days. You’ll experience a slice of that grandeur as the graceful Candlelight Ballet unfolds at The Theatre by QE2.
Besides beloved pieces from The Nutcracker, compositions from Tchaikovsky’s other iconic ballet scores such as The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake will also be brought to life during the Candlelight Ballet by the Middle East Quartet, an accomplished Dubai-based string quartet. As the haunting strains of violins, violas and cellos fill the air, a ballerina will enact famous solos such as The Dying Swan from Swan Lake and the Sleeping Beauty Waltz from The Sleeping Beauty.
There’ll be two Candlelight Ballet shows on both September 30 and October 1, one at 7pm followed by another at 9pm. The only thing between you and this 60-minute magical cultural experience fusing music, history, and dance is just a click – grab those tickets now before you miss out!
